Launch of the Czech translation of Tomáš Hučko’s book
Tomáš Hučko’s slim volume Silver Metallic is an intimate probe into fatherhood, the banality of minor histories, and the “golden nineties.” In this fragmentary text, collective memory collides with individual memory, while relentless inheritance meets incurable illness. Writing for Revue Prostor, Olga Pavlova described the book in these words: “The narrator does not return to the 1990s in order to explain them once and for all, but to understand himself through them: as a son and as a father. Memory here is not a stable image, but a movement of narration that inevitably outgrows the private frame.”
Tomáš Hučko is a prominent Slovak journalist, translator, and prose writer. In his translation work, he focuses primarily on American and English literature (Joseph Conrad, John Steinbeck, John Fante, Christopher Hitchens, Dorothy Parker, H. D. Thoreau, and others). For Rádio Devín, he wrote the radio plays The Land Surveyor K and Life in the Woods, which were nominated in the Best Radio Play category at the 2019 Radio Drama Festival. He made his book debut with the novella Chaconna. In 2017, together with František Malík, he founded the monthly magazine (since 2025 a media platform) Kapitál, where he still serves as editor-in-chief, and in 2020 he was nominated for the Journalism Award.
The programme will also include a discussion with the author, moderated by Olga Pavlova, as well as an exhibition opening of illustrations by Štěpán Blaschke created to accompany the book.
