· About the fundraiser ·
Literature preserves language, historical memory and experience. It lets us discover other people’s lives, ask questions and form our own judgement. Books help shape how society understands itself and the world around it.
Access to different perspectives and the opportunity to compare arguments help people recognise manipulation and question propaganda. Independent publishers widen this space. They publish scholarly works, translations and lesser-known authors, and explore subjects that might be overlooked if expected sales were the only consideration.
Russian attacks on Ukrainian printing facilities and warehouses also threaten the ability to keep publishing. Losing a print run can leave a small publisher without the funds for its next books. When a publisher closes, fewer authors, subjects and experiences reach readers.
By supporting the KSE Foundation programme, we help publishers replace destroyed editions and publish further titles.

· Laichter House ·
We believe small publishers are a foundation of a free and democratic society. That is also why they have historically been among the first targets of authoritarian regimes. They publish small print runs, often without any certainty of profit, and contribute to public debate through books that would otherwise never appear.
Laichter House was home to Jan Laichter’s publishing house, whose work was forcibly ended by the communist regime in 1949. According to family testimony, more than 27,000 copies of its books were destroyed during its liquidation. A law passed in 1949 led to the closure of more than 300 private publishing houses and the introduction of centrally controlled publishing on the Soviet model. Millions of books were destroyed in subsequent campaigns against unwanted literature. We commemorate this history by supporting small Ukrainian publishers so they can keep publishing and their books can reach their readers.

Alongside printing, the programme covers related essential costs incurred by publishers. Payment processing and any administrative costs may also be paid from the funds raised.
