Nordic Modernism
Architecture of the first half of the 20th century in Northern Europe
Sweden and Norway
From Gunnar Asplund’s modern Swedish classicism to Arne Korsmo’s playful Norwegian functionalism
Curator and historian of architecture and design Adam Štěch will present avant-garde architecture and design in Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in the Nordic Modernism lecture series.
In addition to well-known names such as Alvar and Aino Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, and Gunnar Asplund, who defined the emergence of a distinctively Nordic humanist approach to housing design, the lectures will offer an in-depth exploration of the development of interwar architecture and interior design in the individual Nordic countries.
This lecture focuses on Sweden and Norway, tracing a line from Gunnar Asplund’s modern Swedish classicism to Arne Korsmo’s playful Norwegian functionalism.
Emphasis will also be placed on designers and architects whose work is less familiar in the Czech Republic. All lectures are based on Štěch’s own extensive photographic documentation.
The event will take place in Czech.
