An open lecture series by artist, musician, book editor and publisher Vladimir 518 (Vladimír Brož), primarily focused on the complex development of post-war architecture in Czechoslovakia. Alongside thematic areas such as period ideology, questions of stylistic continuity, building construction, and the relationship between architecture and visual art, the series will also offer a critical analysis of the current state of heritage protection for pre-1989 buildings, as well as an up-to-date perspective on activist art in public space.
A detailed insight into the gradual shifts in the stylistic development of post-war Czechoslovak architecture, which, after the interruption of its natural continuity following the Second World War, had to come to terms with the invasive impact of so-called Socialist Realism. Functionalism, Sorela, international modernism, brutalism, early high-tech and machinism, postmodernism and neo-minimalism — all of these appear as a cultural evolutionary adventure within a historical context shaped not only by ideology, but also by the Iron Curtain and insufficient access to building materials.

Public space is both a product and an outcome of social processes — it is not their neutral container, but a tool within which the thinking and actions of individuals take place, as well as the influence of institutions that control this space through legal norms. Art in public space has a long tradition, as do artistic interventions integrated into architecture itself. Activist art forms a chapter of its own, in some cases even seeking to transform urban territory. All of this will be explored in the lecture, which focuses on both the post-war period and the present.
An exploration of the phenomenon of post-war architecture through the medium of historical photographs documenting the construction of now-iconic buildings. Structures, construction process, materials, principles of documentation, civic life, the integration of artworks, archives. An experimental composed lecture by Vladimir 518 framed by the fundamental phenomena of photography and text, as well as freer reflections on architecture as a universal symbol of human civilization.
